To encourage you all to ask more questions during this week’s Open Mic Monday topic, I thought I should answer one of the questions that was posted. And, in the process, add a new Q & A section here at JMMO.

So, here you go.

Here, Scott Allen started off with a real tough challenge/question:

“OK, I got one for you, Shai… I know there’s no way to get rich quick, but let’s say that you had, oh, less than $50 to start with, no established reputation, no web site — what is the fastest way to start earning money online — doesn’t have to be big money, but let’s say significantly more than minimum wage.

For example, if you wanted to make an extra $1,000 in the next two weeks, starting from scratch, what would you do?”

Ooookkkaayyy. First of all, two weeks to make an extra $1,000 certainly sounds like a lot of moolah to make from scratch. And yes, after looking at every possible “make money opportunity” on the web over the last decade, I can attest that there’s no such thing as a get-rich-quick scheme that really works. At least, not in my experience. And yes, there are things that I’m just not in the market to try (even though I have been invited).

Having said that, let me try to answer Scott’s question with my Best Case Scenario Hat on.

So, if I had just $50 to spend and with absolutely zero web presence to work with, here are 3 ideas on how to make money online as quickly as possible:

1) Look and/or Post at Job Boards. Even if I’m not looking for a full time gig, other work (consultancy, work-for-hire, etc) can definitely lead to a good part-time income. In fact, I made my first few dollars online doing a variety of freelance work.

Some possible ideas: Writing content for various publications, editing/copywriting, and offering various services for a fee. Whether you’re good at organising, designing, or speaking - there’s a job out there for you.

2) Source for a Great Product to Sell. Then, do an all-out campaign to sell it in at least 3 ways: eBay, my own site/blog, and through active participation in a relevant community (forums, Facebook, etc). If I haven’t got something that I can produce, I will do some flea market treasure hunting and/or I’d hit the garage sales. And maybe, check storage rooms of friends and family.

During the days when I was actively selling on eBay, I’ve heard of a few good stories of sellers making big bucks in unexpected ways. For example, there was a seller who found a popular old book in a garage sale for about $5. Then, she thought of having it appraised and was surprised at the valuation. I believe the book ended up sold for a few hundred dollars.

Oh, and sometimes, it’s not The One Big Great Product. Often, it’s just a collection of small good products that people would love to have.

Of course, there’s a catch here: To know what products to sell and to know how to sell them - you’ll need to have done some market research and such.

3) Do Something Crazy or Wild. This is one of those things that I just can’t - and won’t - try first hand. But, I know some people doing all sorts of online experiments - from trying silly stunts that attract plenty of attention (and cash) - to doing something “in secret” (like getting in to the adult industry). But, other than these, something crazy or wild might simply mean trying lotto/sweepstakes, getting involved in sports betting or some kind of ‘online busking’.

Yes, I know that #3 won’t be for everyone. And, I’m not at all endorsing illegal and indecent activities. I’m just trying to point out the different ways people make money cheaply and quickly.

I love paper. I know it sounds silly to say that, but it’s true. And, I love books and magazines. I find it very difficult to part with them - no matter how old or used they might be.

So, when I first heard about the ebook, Make Money Tearing Up Old Books and Magazines and Selling Them on eBay*, I cringed. I immediately thought that I can’t possibly do it. But, regardless of the thought (and the bad web design and “old school sales letter” approach), I decided to buy the ebook anyway. Just to see what the author has to say about the subject.

Well, I must admit that I unexpectedly found it to be quite an interesting read. I’m already aware of how to sell on eBay, so some of the tips on that subject were not too useful for me. But, the idea behind the ebook sounded interesting. In fact, if I had the time, I definitely would’ve given the business idea a go.

And yeah, I actually did check out some of the author’s references (her eBay ID and sales), among other things. It all looked pretty feasible.

I’m not sure how tough it is to break in to that particular niche selling space on eBay, but there’s obviously a market for it (selling paper items on eBay). You just have to do your research, apply the tips, experiment a little, and keep on trying different things to set yourself apart.

So, if you’ve always wanted to try making money online through selling on eBay, but you’re not quite sure what to sell, then this might be something you want to try.

Clickbank: Make Money Online with Info Products

Clickbank* is an online marketplace for digital products. Particularly, informational products (ebooks). There are 3 ways you can make money online with Clickbank:

1) Publisher sales. If you have a product to sell, you can sign up for an account and allow your product to be sold by thousands of affiliates. You can offer % of the sale of your products to affiliates. It may seem a bit tough parting with some of those $s, but the good thing is that you can get a number of people to re-sell your product. You get a wider reach. And hopefully, more sales.

2) Affiliate commissions. If you don’t have a product to sell, you can still make money by selling other people’s products. You will then get a % of the product sale. There’s a huge range in the commissions (some offer 1%, some 75%). Read the Affiliate FAQ for more information.

3) Through Referral Fees. If you wish to promote Clickbank, you can get paid for it. Read the Referral Programme FAQ for details.

I’ve been signed up with Clickbank since 2005. Based on my account, I earned over $60 at one time or the other. However, since I’m non-US based, I opted to receive cheques only if it reaches a high level (at the moment $250).

And, since I do not really promote Clickbank links, my account became stagnant. One down side of Clickbank is that if your account becomes stagnant, they start taking your money ($1 per pay period, after 90 days of being stagnant; then $5 per pay period after 180 days; then $15). So, in my case, from $60, I now have less than $20 from all the deductions. A real downer. It can be really discouraging.

However, if you can receive $10 cheques (minimum), then this shouldn’t be a problem. And, if you actively use Clickbank, then you probably won’t encounter the same issue.

In any case, I know it’s a very popular service. And, they do have a few good products for re-sale. So, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Can Google’s (GOOG - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr) new YouTube video ads meaningfully pad the search company’s bottom line?
That’s what Wall Street’s been trying to figure out since Google announced last week that its popular video-sharing site will carry discreet ads on some videos.

The most direct, back-of-the envelope calculations seem to suggest that the ads will fall short of moving the needle right away on a company from which analysts expect revenue of nearly $16 billion next year.

But if advertisers take to the new ad format, and if YouTube maintains its impressive growth, video ads could be a major source of revenue for the company a few years out.

And while online video-ad spending initially will likely come out of Internet ad budgets, the category could get a major boost earlier if advertisers begin shifting even a small fraction of their TV ad budgets into online video ads.

Though Google’s video ad launch has invited a wide range of speculation about how much the new format can bring in, most estimates have been paltry, considering Google’s size.

In a note to clients on Thursday, UBS analyst Ben Schacter estimated that the move could bring Google an additional $120 million. Blog AlleyInsider.com pegged the number at $108 million for the midpoint between its most bearish and bullish scenarios.
Even $120 million would be only about 0.75% of Google’s expected 2008 revenue.

But in his best-case scenario, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster sees the company making $1.1 billion over the next year. And while that analysis assumes rates rising to $40-per-thousand views, along with high-ad placement and YouTube growth rates, the view may be closer to correct if advertisers end up taking to the new format. Piper Jaffray makes a market in Google shares.

That’s because if advertisers were to shift even 2% of the $81.9 billion that UBS estimates will be spent on television ads to the new video category — about $1.6 billion — the rates Google can charge could get a huge boost. UBS makes a market in Google shares.
The $20-per-thousand views Google is initially charging is comparable to rates charged by other high-end display media ads, says Kelly Harris, an account supervisor at ad agency GSD&M, whose clients include carmaker BMW.

But though the ads cost as much as other display ads, their rich video quality allows advertisers to embark on new techniques that are difficult to achieve with other types of advertising.

BMW, for example, is running ads that feature one of its cars — just as it might on television. But a longer, more intricate campaign features a series of videos meant to be entertaining, which are only later revealed to be BMW ads.

While having the potential to be a powerful way to connect with customers, this second type of ad would be a riskier expense on television.
The ads are being run on a trial basis, and BMW is currently not paying for them, Harris says. But the company is keeping a close eye on the results, and the new format so far “seems like a fantastic opportunity to find new, emerging ways to connect proactively with consumers,” Kelly says.
Along with advertising in a way that’s not possible on TV and at a fraction of the cost, other elements are likely to lure television ad dollars to online video ads.

The 18-to-35 male demographic — much coveted by advertisers — is spending more time online and less time watching TV.
Additionally, the spread of digital video-recorders means that a growing number of television viewers can fast-forward through commercials — a move not applicable online.

Google’s latest move, in other words, may be more meaningful on several fronts than believed on the Street.

So many people post here asking why their sites don’t make any money,
here are some of the main reasons. I think that about 70% of people
who post here will never be successful at making moeny with Adsense.
First some illusions people have.
1. If you think you can build a website and within weeks make good
money you are wrong.
2. If you think its easy to make money using Google you are wrong
3. If you have been told you will make easy money from Google you have
been lied to.
4. If you have a 1, 2, or 3 page blog on blogspot, blogger, etc, that
is about making money on the internet you will NOT make any money.
5. If you steal your content from other websites to put on your website
you will not only not make money, you will most probably never get
into the google search engine.
6. If your website is a copy of other websites then very few people
will visit it and even less will return.
7. Most people selling websites that they say make money are LYING.
Only suckers buy them, they are the only people making money from it,
not you.
What must you do to make money on the internet.
1. Love making websites. - If you don’t like making new content then
you will fail. You must enjoy making content more than you enjoy
making money.
2. You MUST have an established website with good traffic BEFORE you
have a google adsense if you want to make money. You will only get
about 10% of people visiting your website clicking on the
advertisements. If you lucky.
3. If you have less than 1000 per day visiting your site you might as
well stop wasting your time, and get a job in the real world. 1000
visitors = 100 clicks, = $10 if you are LUCKY.
4. That $10 for an entire days worth of work.
5. You must have a niche field that other people want to read that is
NOT about making money. A hobby site, or other interest is better.
6. You must know html to be able to change your site to best use
Adsense.
7. You must have your own domain name - very few people on
mysite.blogspot.com make much money.
8. You must have good ranking in Google to get the visitors you need to
survive.
9. You must be prepared to make 10’s to 100’s of webpage’s of your
topic.
10. You must make fresh pages every week (at least) to attract people
and get indexed in the search engines.
11. The best sites do NOT use a blog template, because the old content
is lost, and that old content is also good to earn money from. Use a
normal website template with links to your articles on the front page.
12. You must have good language skills, good writing skills, and a good
idea about how to write for the internet. “What I did today” type
blogs will not make you much if any money. There are literally
millions of blogs about the minutiae of peoples daily lives, you need
something better (or have very exciting days).

Facebook Ad Targeting Could Be Revolutionary

IN SEARCH OF ITS SILVER bullet, Facebook is preparing a highly targeted ad system powered by the personal information provided by members of the trendy social network. The initiative, reported by The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, could eventually justify a huge increase in online ad spending, some analysts said.

Beginning this fall, the privately owned Facebook plans to implement complex algorithms that can predict members’ receptivity to ads. Rather than banner advertising, the Journal reported, Facebook is exploring placing ads within news and content feeds on users’ profile pages.
Facebook did not return press inquiries regarding the system.

Still without a robust monetization strategy, Facebook must clear several hurdles for this grand plan to work.

Noted Forrester analyst Josh Bernoff said: “Unlike Google’s automated AdSense product, Facebook’s system will depend on a large sales force operating smoothly.” There is also the issue, he added, of whether users will object to their behavior being tracked so closely.
Still, if all goes according to plan, this could represent the most significant move in the world of online advertising since the advent of AdSense, according to Bernoff.

“What began as a shift in traffic online resulted in a massive shift in dollars when people realized AdSense worked,” he explained. “Two years from now, this might be seen as the beginning of a similarly huge shift in dollars online, if not bigger, because this has the potential to be a whole lot more relevant than AdSense.”

Thanks to its sheer popularity among young, college-educated consumers, Facebook is already profitable and will post a positive EBITDA this year, according to Jim Breyer, managing partner of Facebook investor Accel Partners.

Breyer, a Facebook board member as well, recently told attendees of Fortune’s iMeme conference that the social network would take in well over $100 million this year, according to press reports.

Facebook has grown three times as fast as MySpace in the past year, according to Nielsen//NetRatings. Seeing a massive influx of first-timers, Facebook U.S. visitor numbers reached 26.6 million in May–up a full 89% year-over-year and 3.6 million more than in April, according to comScore.
Worldwide, comScore reported, Facebook reached 47.2 million visitors in May–8.4 million more than in April, and with an average of 20.6 visits per user.

Xoom Online Payment System

I’ve known of Xoom* for a while now. But, I haven’t had the opportunity to use it until recently, as I’ve been a solid Paypal user for the last 5 years or so. And, I had never felt the need to try a different online payment system. However, Paypal doesn’t serve all countries. And, Xoom offers their service to some of those countries that aren’t reached by Paypal.

So, I ended up signing up for Xoom’s service to send money online to the Philippines. But, I believe they’re also available in other countries like Mexico, India, and Brazil, among others.

Other than its good reach in various countries, other positive things about Xoom are:

The sign-up process is very quick and easy.
Sending money is also relatively simple. However, you do need to provide full information of the recipient (legal name, address, etc).
You can send money using your Paypal account. Or, via credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discovery).
From the recipient’s point of view, it’s good to have different options for receiving money (via cheque/cash pick-up, direct bank deposit, or cheque home delivery).
Recipients also don’t pay fees. And, sender’s fees are quite reasonable.

One drawback that I found with Xoom is that there’s a minimum sending amount. In the Philippines’ case, for example, you need to send a minimum of US$25. So, there was a time when I couldn’t send a couple of people some money through Xoom because I only owed them $5-10.

Since I’ve never received money through Xoom, I’m not sure what that’s like. I did read mixed reviews. But, I think they were mostly good.

I know that a few of our bloggers in b5 receive money via Xoom, and it seems to work well for them.

And, for those who might be interested in promoting Xoom, you might be interested to know that they run an affiliate programme through Commission Junction. Affiliate commission is a flat rate of $6 per new customer who signs up through your affiliate link and sends money.
